National Coaching Certification Program - a programme in change. Information on NCCP can now be found at www.connectedcoach.com.
The Coaching Association of Canada and the National Coaching Certification Council are amalgamating - "After so much discussion and debate in recent years, it is gratifying that the process is coming to fruition and with such a positive outcome," said CAC chair Peggy Gallant of Antigonish, Nova Scotia. "There can be no doubt that this exciting development will result in a new direction for coach education in Canada, with a dynamic new culture and expanded partnerships. It is important to note that the amalgamation is supported by the Federal/Provincial/Territorial governments responsible for sport." For more information, go to www.coach.ca
The NCCP is moving towards a competency based programme with sports at different stages in this change. The multi sport (theory) programme Part A and B replace the Theory 1 and 2 of old. The technical component, organised by badminton, will change but, at present, coaches still take Levels 1, 2 and 3 and complete their practical following these courses. Before taking levels 1 and 2, coaches should complete their theory courses to that level. For more information on technical courses, contact the OBA at info@ontariobadminton.on.ca
The NCCP level sought should be directly related to the level of athlete being coached, i.e. Level 1: novice athletes; Level 2: intermediate to advanced athletes; Level 3: provincially elite athletes (top 4 in Ontario in U16/19/Open categories); Level 4: Nationally elite athletes; Level 5: International competitive athletes. Levels 4 and 5 are overseen by Badminton Canada. Applicants for the Level 4 programme are recommended by the OBA.
NCCP Theory Courses: Introduction to Competition Update As of April 1, 2004, the old Theory 1 and Theory 2 NCCP courses have been replaced by the new Introduction to Competition Multi-Sport courses. Introduction to Competition is delivered in two parts, each with three modules. Part A consists of "Ethical Coaching", "Planning a Practice", and "Nutrition" and Part B consists of "Designing a Basic Sport Program", "Teaching and Learning", and "Teaching Basic Mental Skills". These modules are now available by correspondence. A coach who has already taken Theory 1 may take Part B for Theory 2. Go to www.connectedcoach.com for information on upcoming courses. Level 3 theory courses have not changed (at January 2005). Equivalency update (January 2005): The Coaching Association of Canada has made the decision that applications for NCCP Theory equivalency will be accepted from coaches who earned a degree in Phys. Ed. or Kinesiology prior to March 31 2004. Contact hstephen@sportalliance.com for more information.
